Saint Hugh’s Bones: Maintenance of Shoemaking, Leatherworking, and Other Edged Tools
It is an axiom that “…’tis a poor workman that blames his tools.” Nearly as axiomatic is the saying that, “If you care well for your tools, they will care well for you.” Whether in the workshop, the kitchen, the woodlot, or the field, a well-maintained tool is safer and more efficient, making one’s work much easier and more enjoyable.
Cordwainer Brett Walker will be teaching this semi-annual class, which covers all aspects of tool maintenance, sharing twenty-five years of experience in using shoemaking and other tools. Skills and information will be taught in the following areas:
- Prepping tools
- Hafting awl blades and other blades
- “Tuning” awl blades for efficient work
- Sharpening edged tools (knives, hatchets, &c.)
- Modifying tools for better use and/or for more historical appearance
- Tool care for long service
- And much more…
This workshop is best for people who have some previous experience using traditional hand tools, and is hightly recommended for new shoemaking and leatherworking students. For ages 16 and up, with parental or guardian supervision for minors. [Waiver required.]
